Thematic Exhibition The Imperial Household and the Transmission of Courtly Elegance

Continuing unbroken since ancient times, the Japanese imperial family has at times served as the political backbone of the government and at times been trapped in the interstices of internal civil wars, tossed about on the waves of history. However, at the same time, it has continually born the central role of the transmission of traditional Japanese culture, starting with the various special events and ceremonies of the imperial court, featuring waka poetry, calligraphy, incense, gagaku music, and other cultural practices. Presented in conjunction with the accession of the new emperor scheduled for May of 2019, this exhibition introduces the various aspects of the distinctive culture cultivated at the Japanese imperial court through calligraphic and painted works, interior furnishings and accessories, textiles, and other objects.
