Special Exhibition The Doll Festival in the Owari Tokugawa Family 2020

The Doll Festival, otherwise known as the “Peach Blossom Festival,” is a time for displaying the Emperor and Empress dolls, the Three Ladies-in-Waiting, the Five Musicians, and various dolls and doll accessories of the Hina Doll set and is a brilliant event that announces the arrival of spring. The Tokugawa Art Museum preserves Hina Dolls and their accessories that were made to order for the princess of the Owari Tokugawa family and each set exhibits the highest quality, as is befitting of the name of the top-ranking of the three Tokugawa branch families. The minutely intricate workmanship of the doll accessories is absolutely stunning, as if they were miniatures of the actual wedding trousseaus of the princesses. In addition, the decorations for the tiered doll stand that was used to display the dolls and accessories of three generations of Owari Tokugawa wives from the Meiji period onward are also stunning. This exhibition presents the extravagant and refined world of dolls that is distinctive of an elite daimyō family.
