Thematic Exhibition Kara-e: Classic Chinese Paintings of the Owari Tokugawa Clan

The Owari Tokugawa family accumulated a substantial collection of Chinese paintings with masterpieces from the Higashiyama Gomotsu collection, which is said to have been owned by the Ashikaga shogunal family, at their core. In the 350 years of the Owari Tokugawa family's long history, many works have been scattered and lost, but fortunately many documents recording the origins and transmission of the collections survive, allowing us to trace the actual status of the collection at various points, including identifying works that eventually left the Owari Tokugawa family.
This exhibition will present to the public for the first time ever the entire group of traditional Chinese paintings, including works from the Higashiyama Gomotsu shogunal collection, that have been passed down in the Owari Tokugawa family, bringing us closer to a complete understanding of the reception of Chinese paintings by this leading daimyo family.
